Richard never set out to become an expert on refugee integration having begun his working career as an apprentice with British Telecom in rural Norfolk. Entering the field of economic development for the first time in 2004 he was soon exposed to the needs of communities he knew little about and began meeting with some of the most influential people in his life. These ranged from community activists in white working-class areas of Bristol suffering intergenerational poverty and deprivation, through to community leaders within refugee and racially minoritised communities.
Subsequently Richard has built a strong reputation for designing and delivering innovative projects to realise the capabilities of refugees. These have been recognised in a number of national awards, including the Queen’s Award for Enterprise. He continues this work through the development of projects to ensure diversity is core to the future of work in the UK and community is at the centre of the just transition to Net Zero in East Africa.
Alongside his practice led innovation Richard is an Engaged Scholar at Aston University bringing practice into research, focused on the economic resilience of ethnic minority enterprise. Whilst at University of West England he holds a Visiting Fellowship researching knowledge equity in service design.
